Training
Long before Rocky Mountain Horses were identified as a breed, Vernon Stamper's family owned and bred Mountain Horses. Some of the Mountain Breeds’ oldest and most desirable bloodlines originated on Stamper farms. In 1984, Vernon and Joyce Stamper founded Overlook Stables.
What a perfect match! It’'s not often that a man has a career that spans his lifetime and is his great passion, but for Vernon Stamper this is the case. He says he cannot remember a time when he couldn’t ride a horse. As a young child, Vernon’'s father instilled the love of horses and shared his keen horsemanship instincts. Vernon has exceptional horsemanship abilities!
Joyce is also a skilled horseperson. Joyce was raised with farm-use horses and learned to ride at an early age. She mostly rode and showed gaited horses. One of Joyce’'s passions is working with young riders. Caleb McVey joined the team in 2005 as rider and assistant trainer. (Overlook Stables has a long history of champion Juvenile riders. In fact, in 1996, Michael McVey, riding Fair Silk, won the Kentucky 4-H championship – a rarity for a gaited horse!)
Vernon and Joyce have been members of the Rocky Mountain Horse Association (RMHA) since 1987, joining only a few months after the Association began. Vernon served on the RMHA Board of Directors from 1987-1995. During this period, he was instrumental in establishing the Association’'s Show Circuit, DQP and Judging programs. Additionally, he was RMHA International Show Manager for its first two years. Vernon Stamper is a certified Judge with the RMHA, United Mountain Horse, Mountain Pleasure and Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse(KMSHA) Associations as well as the National Walking Horse Association. In 2009, he judged the Celebration and the UMH World Show. Both Vernon and Joyce have been DQPs for over 20+ years. Caleb is a Certified KMSHA judge and DQP.
With decades of professional experience, Vernon brings an excellence to Overlook'’s training program that is designed for all levels of riders and their horses. Overlook’'s training program is designed for horses to be conditioned and schooled for competition or for recreational riding. Vernon and Joyce, in consultation with the owner(s), assess each horse that is placed in training to be shown to determine the horse’s best performance potential. No shortcuts are taken in Overlook’ Stables' conditioning and training program.
Overlook Stables has access to more than 700 acres of beautiful trails in the foothills of the Appalachians which include woods and rolling pastures that are used for trail training to introduce the horses to forests, streams, hills, water, logs and other natural obstacles. Overlook also uses this beautiful setting to condition show horses so they stay fresh and ready to win in the show ring!
Please contact us to learn more how we can be of service to you as you prepare your horse for the trail or show ring!
